The Premiere New Play Festival in the U.S.
Join Bill English for the final (and most important) weekend of the Humana Festival for New Plays. We will see 5 fully-staged World Premieres, explore Louisville, Kentucky, attend artist-led discussions, and insider parties! Accommodations are at the newly renovated Marriot Courtyard just a block away from the theatre and the Ohio River waterfront in downtown Louisville. Hotel, all shows, talks, parties, continental breakfasts, Private Trolly Tour of Louisville, entrance to one museum, and most dinners are included in this tour. This tour does not include airfare, lunches, dinner on Tuesday or Thursday or anything not expressly listed below.
This is a basic itinerary (and subject to change). A more complete itinerary will be available in mid-March:
Tuesday, April 2
Arrive (on our own) to The Marriot Courtyard – Downtown Louisville
Wednesday, April 3
- 9:30 AM: Breakfast at the award-winning Wild Eggs restaurant
- 10:30 AM: From the restaurant, we will head on a Private Trolley Tour of Louisville,
- 12-2 PM: Stopping at Churchill Downs for a tour, including a special look “inside the vault,” check out rare artifacts not available to the general public, and speak the curatorial department.
- 3:30 PM: Tour ends and we’re back at Marriott Courtyard.
- 6:00 PM: Dinner at the English Grill in the famed Brown Hotel.
Thursday, April 4
- 10:30 A.M. Actors Theatre of Louisville Dramaturgue Hannah Montgomery will give us an overview of the weekend’s shows and how they were picked (San Francisco Playhouse Exclusive Event).
- 11:30 Explore the city on your own. Check out the local attractions that most interest you! Whether its more of the museums, the Bourbon Trail, or the local art galleries, there is plenty to do!
- 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM: It’s the Cocktail Mixer to start the festival off. Spend time with friends, meet new ones, and hobnob with writers, actors, and theatre creators from all over the country!
Friday, April 5
- The morning is your own!
- 11 AM: No Host Lunch – Ken will make reservations at Doc Crows Smokehouse and Raw Bar for anyone who’d like to lunch together (we will ask for separate checks).
- 1 PM: Panel Conversation with the Artists.
- 3 PM: The Corpse Washer, by Ismail Khalidi and Naomi Wallace.
- 5:45 PM: With one of the most breathtaking views of any restaurant in Louisville, The RiVue will host or pre-show dinner.
- 8 PM: Everybody’s Black by Dave Harris.
Saturday, April 6
- 10:30 AM: Zachary Meicher-Buzzi, the Artistic Manager of ATL, will explain the casting process and give us a history of the festival (San Francisco Playhouse Exclusive Event)
- 11:00 AM: Lunch on your own
- 12 PM: The Thin Place by Lucas Hnath.
- 2:30 PM: How to Defend Yourself by Lily Padilla.
- 6:30 PM: Our final group dinner will be at Edward Lee’s Milkwood. Lee is the award-winning and Emmy-nominated chef featured in PBS’s third season of Mind of a Chef. Milkwood is named in honor of Dylan Thomas’s Radio Drama Under the Milkwood, and is located in the Actors Theatre.
- 9:00 PM: A Keynote Speaker and Awards presentation, followed by
- 10:00 PM: The Encore Bash hosted by Actors Theatre of Louisville.
Sunday, April 7
- 10:30 AM: We’ve Come to Believe by Kara Lee Corthron, Emily Feldman, and Matthew Paul Olmos.
- 11:45 AM: Got an early flight home? Head back to the hotel and pick up your luggage. The Airport is about 15 min away, you should be able to make a 2 PM Flight without any problem.
- 11:45 AM: (Optional) Bill English will hold court, as we meet for coffee/tea to discuss all the shows we’ve see.
- 1 PM: (Optional) No Host Lunch: Ken will make a reservation at Whiskey Dry, Ed Lee’s newest and most casual spot, and we’ll keep the conversation going.
- 2:30 PM: It’s probably time to head to the airport for those late afternoon flights.
